For one reason or another, people fall into the harmful habit of substance abuse. Whether it is overeating, cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse or drug abuse – some individuals have the tendency to overdo things and fall into harmful addictive patterns.
Although overeating, tobacco smoking and alcoholism are quite common forms of substance abuse, the one which is usually a cause for serious concern is substance abuse. Basically, drug abuse refers to the reliance of an individual to mood-altering drugs or similar harmful substances which can be used for purpose other than for what they are intended.

Although this is a broad definition of the term, there are many types of substances which can be unwittingly abused to suit each person's individual purpose. However, the substances which are commonly abused and are considered illegal includes marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines, as well as club drugs such as Ecstasy and Rophynol.
In order for friends and family to detect whether an individual is into substance abuse, there are several symptoms to look out for. First, a sudden change in the personality of an individual may be a sign of substance abuse. If money or valuables are missing within the household, it could be a sign that a family member is abusing a particular substance. Increased aggressiveness, irritability, forgetfulness and being depressed are additional signs of substance abuse. Naturally, there is a need to seek medical help if you or any of your family members are into substance abuse. Aside from a general practitioner, there are also resources within the community where you can refer an individual who is into substance abuse.
